DAVIS Cup tennis will return to the game's spiritual home in Australia, Kooyong, after Tennis Australia last night announced the venue for the coming quarter-final against Belarus.
At a meeting of the Tennis Australia board yesterday, Kooyong beat rival bids from Melbourne Park - which wanted to host the tie on Margaret Court Arena - as well as Adelaide and Canberra for the April 7-9 tie. With Melbourne-based players Peter Luczak, Chris Guccione and Wayne Arthurs all playing a big part in Australia's recent 3-2 victory over Switzerland, Melbourne was regarded as a logical host for the tie.Kooyong, the scene of Australia's finals victories in 1983 and 1986, both against Sweden, most recently hosted a tie in 1993, when Australia beat the US in the first round.Davis Cup captain John Fitzgerald, who was part of the team that won the cup in 1983 and 1986, welcomed the return of Kooyong to the international stage."It is great to be able to return to Kooyong for a Davis Cup tie as the venue holds so many great memories for tennis fans," he said.
